What is a Pressure Washer?

Pressure washers are the up-and-coming, must-have power tool for the 21st century. In the not-too-distant future, pressure washers will be as common in suburban garages as lawn mowers, snow blowers and line trimmers are today.
Pressure washers are multi-purpose cleaning machines that can wash away dirt and grime in a fraction of the time that it takes using the traditional cleaning methods of a scrub bucket, soap, water and a brush. This tool combines an electric motor or gas engine with a high pressure pump to turn an ordinary garden hose into a high-powered cleaning machine.
Pressure washers can be used effectively for a multitude of do-it-yourself cleaning jobs -- house exteriors; decks, ramps, patios and lawn furniture; driveways and sidewalks; cars, bicycles and motorcycles; garage floors; fences; lawn mowers and other outdoor equipment; garbage cans and recycling bins; dog kennels; and boats.

Major Components!
A pressure washer is comprised of 6 major components:

Power Supply: The electric motor or gasoline engine drives the pump.

Pump: At the heart of the machine, the pump produces water flow.

Cart / Frame: Protects (motor/engine/pump) assembly, organizes hose and wand, and improves portability around the work area.

High Pressure Hose: Transfers water from the pump to the wand.

Spray Gun and Wand: Controls water flow and spray pattern.

Wheels: The type of wheels will determine the level of mobility.

The Cleaning Power of Water!
The cleaning power of water is measured several ways.

Water Pressure: Pressure is measured in pounds per square inch, or PSI, and refers to the intensity of water flow.

Water Flow: Flow is measured in gallons per minute, or GPM. and refers to the volume of water produced on one minute. Water flow is just as important as pressure for achieving good cleaning results.

How Fast Can A Pressure Washer Clean?

How Fast can a Pressure Washer Clean?: The rating of a pressure washer is very easy. To find the cleaning units (CU) on any pressure washer you just take the PSI, Water Pressure and multiply that with the GPM. This rating indicates how much surface area can be cleaned in 5 minutes. Pressure washers with higher CU's* clean at a fast rate than models with lower CU ratings.

______ 20-33 sq. ft. - 3.8 to 6 HP - 3,000 to 5,000 Cleaning Units

________ 33 - 47 sq. ft. - 5 to 6.5 HP - 5,000 to 7000 Cleaning Units

__________ 47 - 60 sq. ft. - 6.5 to 9 HP - 7,000 to 9,000 Cleaning Units

______________  60 - 93 sq. ft. - 9 to 13 HP - 9,000 to 14,000 Cleaning Units

* Cleaning Units (CU) = Water Pressure (PSI) x Water Flow (GPM)
