Conventional frame pumps are great, but a CO2 cartridge inflation system can fill a tire much faster and tucks away in a small seat pack. One of the nicest we’ve seen is Innovations In Cycling’s Ultraflate ($15.97 including one 12-gram cartridge). Made of high-impact plastic, this pump will accept any size threaded or non-threaded cartridge (so you won’t have to search for a particular replacement). And it fits both Schrader and presta valves with no adapter fiddling. The cartridge will fill a road tire to approximately 75 psi (enough to get you home) and a knobby to about 35 psi. Of course, the one drawback of this type of pump is that you pay every time you pump and the cartridges are not recyclable. But the convenience and speedy inflation is undeniably handy. Racers in particular love these tiny CO2 pumps.
